Windows Media Player Movie Problems

Close Combat: First to Fight requires Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher for in-game movies to display properly. If you wish to install Windows Media Player 9.0 manually please load disk 1 into the tray and then browse for <CD Drive>:\MPSetup.exe. Running MPSetup.exe will install Windows Media Player 9.0 to your machine.

On a few machines in-game movies will not play properly or crash the application. These problems may be caused by a specific Windows Media Player codec not being on these machines.

The Close Combat: First to Fight patch modifies the movie files so they play as .wmv files instead of .avi files. This should correct the problem. The patch will not negatively affect users that have not experienced this problem. Users on limited accounts or users that have customized settings to disallow file extension changes may have to change the movie extensions manually. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Close all open applications on your desktop.
  2. Double click on the "My Computer" icon. Open the "Program Files" folder. Open the "Destineer" folder. Open the "First to Fight" folder. (This is the default path during game installation. If you customized the install please open the path you set).
  3. Once the "First to Fight" folder is open, go up to the top most drop down menu options in the upper left. (The options available through this menu are File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, etc). Under "View", click "details".  This will change the files in the folder so it's easier to sort through and see them all.
  4. The window will display all of the files. Click the "Type" header at the top of the window. This will place all Windows Media Player files together (total of 18).
  5. The file extensions will need to be changed to .wmv. The file extensions must be set to visible. From the "First to Fight" folder noted in step 3 above click the "Tools" menu and select "Folder Options". Click on the tab that says "View".
  6. Scroll through the checkboxes and look for "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck the box to the left of it and click "Apply" to save the changes. Click the "OK" button.
  7. When viewing the Windows Media Player files the names will be "OpeningMovie.avi", "EKA.avi", "Intro_Tutorial_English.avi", etc.  Right click on each of the movies and select "rename" from the drop down menu and rename ".avi" to ".wmv" (in lower case) and hit Enter. Do this until all of the Windows Media Player files have the extension .wmv instead of .avi.
  8. Double check the 18 Windows Media Player files are named as follows:

attract.wmv
AUA.wmv
BZA.wmv
closing_credits.wmv
CTA.wmv
CTC.wmv
destineer-640X480.wmv
