Software Update:

Links Championship Edition Software Update version 1.0.4

This update includes the Links Course Converter package and an updated Links application addressing a variety of known issues. Click below to update Links Championship Edition for Macintosh to version 1.0.4. This will download a 2MB Update file to your computer.

This update requires Stuff-it Expander. If you don't have it, you can download it free by clicking HERE.

Installation Instructions:

After the download is complete, double-click on the downloaded file. This will create a file called "Links CE 1.0.4 Updater." Double-click this file and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Troubleshooting:

If you are getting startup errors, please check if the following apply:

  1. If you are using Mac OS 9 and have an ATI video card, be sure to run the "March 2002 ATI Retail Update" which is included on CD #1. This fixes many OpenGL issues with ATI video hardware.
  2. If you are experiencing problems using Links with Mac OS X, first check to make sure that your video hardware is supported for OpenGL 3D Acceleration. Most video hardware is supported. But, as of this writing, the ATI Rage Pro series of video hardware (found in early iMac and beige PowerMac computers) is not supported by Apple for OpenGL 3D Acceleration under MacOS X. Please run Links with Mac OS 9 instead.
  3. If you have a PowerBook G4 with Mac OS 9.x and you are told during startup that you do not have an acceptable video device, use the "Extensions Manager" control panel to turn off the NVIDIA extensions. Then, restart your machine.
  4. If you are using Links with Mac OS 9 and see some graphics draw as a solid white, or graphical "blocking" within the game, the problem may be memory related. Try increasing the amount of virtual memory you are using in the Memory control panel, restart your computer, and run Links again.

The system freezes or displays a "kernel panic" in OS X 10.1.5 and earlier.

Cause: An error in the ATI video drivers causes these problems to occur on a small percentage of ATI-based Macs.

Solution: Download the latest ATI drivers directly from ATI's website.

If the Links game is not performing as responsively as it should and your computer fits the minimum system requirements described above:

  1. Upgrade to the latest version of Mac OS. These upgrades are usually available through a free download from Apple's website. Apple and its video hardware manufacturers have made MANY performance improvements in graphics in Mac OS 9.2.2 and higher.
  2. Re-start your computer and run Links again. When using some video cards with certain computers, some games, including Links, slow in performance each time you run the game without re-starting your computer.
  3. Reduce your monitor resolution and/or color depth. Links supports a minimum resolution of 800x600. (See the Links instructions manual.)
  4. Increase the amount of memory allocated for Links. (See the Links instruction manual). Links has been optimized for the courses included in this package. It may be necessary to increase Links' memory for courses you download over the Internet.
  5. If you are using Mac OS 9 and have an ATI video card, be sure to run the "March 2002 ATI Retail Update" which is included on CD #1. This fixes many OpenGL issues with ATI video hardware. Also note that there are even more recent updates for many ATI Mac products on ATI's website, http://www.ati.com.

If you get an error " Can not find Language.dll and somefile.huh":

You have may have an odd character in your hard drive. Please make sure your hard drive has only letter and numbers in it name. Also, be sure to check all the folders that lead to the Links application. All items should only be named with letters or numbers. No dashes, periods, bullets, quotes, etc. This only affects OS X users.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I install the additional player animations and courses in Links?

Answer: To install golfer animations, start Links Championship Edition. Click "Options" from the main menu and then choose "Golfer Animations." Click the buttons under "Jumbo" next to each animation you would like to load. (Jumbo refers to the animation file size and includes pre- and post-shot animations) If you want to also install the players' quips and comments, check the box under "Voice" next to each player animation that you install. Click "OK" and the game will ask you to insert the CDs that it needs to copy the files. Once the inserted CD spins up, choose the CD in the drop-down window and click "OK."

To install other courses, insert CD 2, 3 or 4, and from the Options menu, choose "Course Manager." Click "Add" and choose the CD from the drive list. In the pane below the drive list, double-click the GAME and COURSES folders. The courses will appear in the large right pane. Check the box next to each course you would like to load and click "Add." Repeat this process to load courses from the other disks.

I can't find the Course Converter described in the instruction book.

Answer: The Course Converter was not included on the CDs originally due to a technical problem. It is included in the 1.0.4 update.
